The parish of Newstead includes Newstead Village, formerly Newstead Colliery Village, part of Newstead Abbey and its grounds and Priory Wood.
Newstead Village with population of about 1200 is set in open countryside and woodland. It is situated approximately 10 miles to the north west of Nottingham and within 3 miles of junction 27 of the M1 motorway.
For much of its life Newstead Colliery had been one of the most productive and profitable coal mines in the country, and a pioneer in innovative mining techniques. The colliery finally closed on 19th March 1987.
Just to the east of the village was the Annesley Motive Power Depot which closed in 1966. It now lies buried under the landscaped slag heap.
What were once slag heaps have now been returned to green belt offering walkers an opportunity to experience the wild life and many beautiful and sometimes rare flora and fauna.
The village is also a gateway to the historic Newstead Abbey and grounds.
There is a direct link by rail to Nottingham and Worksop and beyond.
There is also a bus service linking Nottingham and Mansfield and the Nottingham tram system terminates at the nearby town of Hucknall.
