Newstead Village was once home to many garden allotment plots which have mainly been taken over by houses and industrial units over the years.
Newstead Allotment Association originated from requests by local residents to have the opportunity to re-establish garden allotment plots in the village.
This was also assisted by The Newstead Health Living Centre's promotion of healthy eating, excercise and community well being. A part time community gardener has been employed for approximately 3 years and has co-ordinated this project along with local volunteers.

Over this time funds have been raised and a small allotment plot was established in 2003 on Tilford Road. This is in the heart of the village and is easily accessed. It has been equipped with handrails and paths for ease of access and is adjacent to a play area, for parents who want to keep their children amused whilst tending their plots.
The popularity of the allotment plots with the community, including the local primary school meant that we wanted to expand to meet the demand of local residents.

 
With the help of funding from Building Better Communities, Awards for All, Nottinghamshire Community Foundation's Coalfields Regeneration Trust and the Co-Op we have been able to take on a bigger ambitious project.
After many months of decisions and research by local volunteers we finally decided on the re-establishment of an old allotment site, lost to the former coal stocking yard area.
This allotment plot, now named Bottom Gardens, sits in a site of importance for nature and conservation (SINC), managed by Notts County Council. With the assistance of Notts County Council we were given permission to re-establish this allotment plot which has had approximately 30 years of neglect.
