Notice of Vacancy in the Office of Parish Councillor

 
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN pursuant to Section 87(2) of the Local Government Act 1972 that a vacancy has occurred in the office of Councillor for the Parish of Newstead as a result of the resignation of Councillor Mrs T. Sabin.

 
An election to fill the vacancy will be held if, on or before Wednesday 25th January 2012 (being a date within 14 days of the date of this notice excluding bank holidays and weekends), notice in writing of a request for an election has been given to the Returning Officer, Gedling Borough Council, Civic Centre, Arnot Hill Park, Arnold, Nottingham, NG5 6LU by ten persons who are registered as local government electors for the area of the Parish.

 
If an election is not requested, the vacancy will be filled by the Parish Council.

Newstead Village, formerly Newstead Colliery Village, with a population of about 1200 is situated approximately 10 miles to the north west of Nottingham and within 3 miles of junction 27 of the M1 motorway.
There is a direct link by rail to Nottingham and beyond. Nearby Hucknall is the terminus for the Nottingham Express Transit (tram) with free parking facilities.

 
Newstead Colliery 1987 For much of its life Newstead Colliery had been one of the most productive and profitable coal mine in the country and a pioneer in innovative mining techniques.

 
The colliery finally closed on 19th March 1987.

 
Freckland Wood What were once spoil heaps have now been returned to green belt offering walkers an opportunity to experience the wild life and many beautiful and sometimes rare flora and fauna.

 
The village is also a gateway to the historic Newstead Abbey and grounds.
